ISLAMABAD—The Federal Investigation Agency's (FIA) Cyber Wing has launched an investigation into a social media campaign featuring manipulated images of Maryam Nawaz, Chief Minister of Punjab, and Mohammed bin Zayed, President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The controversy began a few days ago when Maryam Nawaz met with the UAE President and shook hands during an official engagement. Following this, doctored versions of the images were shared widely on social media, with objectionable edits aimed at defaming Maryam and the UAE President.
According to FIA sources, a list of social media accounts involved in spreading these altered images has been compiled. The agency stated that these accounts were used to create and distribute AI-generated content as part of a deliberate smear campaign.
A photograph of Maryam Nawaz shaking hands with Mohammed bin Zayed was initially shared by her special assistant on platform X (formerly Twitter). The image also featured Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, who was present during the meeting.
The FIA has confirmed that dedicated teams have been deployed to trace the origins of the manipulated material. Officials assured those responsible for this campaign would be identified and held accountable under relevant laws.
