Sindh most dangerous for journos: research

ISLAMABAD: Research by Intermedia Pakistan shows that contrary to perceptions, Sindh is the most dangerous territory in Pakistan to practice journalism.

According to a post on Facebook by the organization’s Pakistan Executive Director Adnan Rehmat, 23 journalists have been killed in 12 years in the province, including 17 in the last five years (2008-12).

The second worst place to be a journalist is Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa with a total of 18 killed in 12 years (14 in the last five). Balochistan is close third - 17 killed since 2000.

However, when measured for the last five years (2008-12), Balochistan has been the worst place to be a journalist in Pakistan with all 17 killings coming in these five years.

The Tribal Areas (FATA) and Punjab are tied for the fourth worst place to practice journalism with 11 killings each — most in both cases occurring in the last five years.

Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir seem to be the safest places in the country for journalists with no killings recorded there. Even Islamabad, normally considered safer, has seen three murders.
