ISLAMABAD—Journalist Tariq Hassan, affectionately known as "Tari", passed away today at the Shaukat Khanum Hospital, Lahore after a courageous battle with lung cancer.
Diagnosed with stage-four cancer in August of last year, his case was deemed dire by doctors. Despite the grim prognosis, Tariq fought bravely, showing signs of improvement in the early months. However, his health began to decline five months ago, ultimately leading to his passing as he was placed on a ventilator.
Tariq's career in journalism spanned many years. He began his journey at The Pakistan Times, where his sharp insight and dedication quickly made him a respected figure in the newsroom. He later joined The News as a sub-editor, where he continued to make significant contributions.
In addition to his work in journalism, Tariq transitioned to the development sector, where he served as a Senior Media Officer for the Trust for Democratic Education and Accountability (TDEA) and the Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN). His work focused on media relations and other critical tasks that furthered democratic accountability in Pakistan.
Colleagues and friends remember Tariq as cheerful and content, known for his "happy-go-lucky" demeanor and infectious optimism. He was loved and respected by all who knew him. He will be laid to rest in his hometown of Shorkot.
