Arab journalists pledge cooperation to defend media freedom
Jordanian and Egyptian journalist unions announced closer cooperation on training and advocacy, reaffirming opposition to media restrictions and highlighting the Arab media's role in shaping global narratives.

AMMAN — Leaders of Jordanian and Egyptian journalists’ syndicates have announced plans to strengthen cooperation on professional training and media advocacy, signaling a renewed push for collective action among Arab media institutions.

The discussions focused on building institutional partnerships that can support journalists facing professional, legal, and political pressures, while reinforcing shared standards for ethical and independent reporting across the region.

Regional training and advocacy priorities

Both sides emphasized the importance of joint training programs aimed at improving reporting skills, newsroom leadership, and digital competencies, describing professional development as essential to sustaining credible journalism.

They also highlighted the role of Arab media in shaping international understanding of regional events, including the Gaza conflict, underscoring the responsibility of journalists to provide accurate, contextualized coverage to global audiences.

Media freedom amid regional pressures

The syndicate leaders reaffirmed their opposition to restrictions on media freedom, emphasizing that independent journalism requires institutional support and cross-border solidarity to withstand external pressures.

They said enhanced cooperation would help media organizations share expertise, coordinate advocacy, and defend journalists’ rights, positioning collaboration as a practical response to shared challenges across the Arab media landscape.
