Veteran journalist Jonaid Iqbal leaves for his heavenly abode

ISLAMABAD: The journalist fraternity in Islamabad was mourning the loss of a veteran colleague Jonaid Iqbal, 76, who died Wednesday while writing a column for a foreign newspaper.

He was buried amid tears at the H-8 Graveyard in Islamabad Thursday afternoon. Among the mourners were many of his friends from the media. Formerly associated with Dawn, and a former additional secretary National Assembly, Mr Iqbal had undergone angiography recently.

According to Dawn, he started his career in journalism in the 50's. He was born in Kolkata on October 4, 1939 in British India.

His days at the National Assembly Secretariat are still remembered by his journalist friends, who fondly recall how he used to meet their demands for information as a public relations officer.  "He would even buy us food from the assembly cafe," said Javed Jaidi, a senior journalist.

Mr Iqbal has left behind two sons and two daughters. One of his sons Nasir Iqbal is a senior journalist and works for Dawn.
