Shaheen Sehbai reported that Talat Hussain may have been sacked again from Geo TV. This situation highlights ongoing issues within Pakistani journalism regarding censorship.Summary
ISLAMABAD - Shaheen Sehbai, former editor of The News, on Sunday said that Talat Hussain, who hosts Naya Pakistan show on Geo TV, may have been sacked again by the Jang Group.
In a tweet, Sehbai said: “TALAT HUSSAIN SACKED AGAIN: I don't have confirmation but if that has happened it will be 2nd time Jang Group has sacked him. 1st time in Feb 2001 he was sacked as fake Executive Editor of The News in Pindi by me as he had no contract/appointment letter and was working as Exec Ed.”
Politically the two former editors have taken different sides. Talat Hussain is considered pro-Nawaz Sharif while Sehbai is openly against the jailed former prime minister.
Of late, Talat is among journalists who have complained their articles in The News have not been published, alleging censorship under the pressure of the military.
It seems that Talat’s tweet that all is not well with him at Geo TV made a number of people, including Sehbai, to infer he is about to leave the channel.
Talat’s show on the arrival and arrest of Nawaz Sharif in Lahore on Friday was not aired by Geo.
He expressed unhappiness through his tweet. “#NayaPakistan no show. I have a few things to sort out at Geo before I go on air again. Without space for factual reporting all journalism is meaningless.”
