ISLAMABAD - The Rawalpindi-Islamabad Union of Journalists (RIUJ) has expressed serious concern over the Federal Investigation Agency summons to senior journalist and anchorperson, Mubashir Zaidi.
The journalist informed RIUJ about how he was called over the weekend to appear before the Cybercrime Wing on Nov 21. Zaidi said that he did not receive any written summons from the investigating agency.
In a statement, RIUJ showed concern over the way the Cybercrime Wing is being used to target journalists. Instead of sending a proper notice through official channels, the FIA officials posted the summons on social media. It was shared on a Twitter account created by the agency.
The RIUJ has appealed to Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal to direct the relevant officials to show restraint in using the Cybercrime Wing to target journalists.
The union vowed that the freedom of the press could not be suppressed through such actions. It should be clear to all that RIUJ, under the umbrella of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), stands determined to protect and defend all working journalists, the statement said.
Zaidi co-hosts the program Zara Hut Kay on DawnNews TV.
