The PFUJ has strongly condemned the arrest of reporter Gohar Wazir, reiterating the importance of press freedom in Pakistan. Union leaders demand accountability for the arrest and emphasize the need for independent reporting.

ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has condemned the arrest of Khyber News reporter Gohar Wazir.

PFUJ President Afzal Butt and Secretary-General Ayub Jan Sarhandi, in a joint statement issued on Wednesday, warned the government that they would not tolerate the restrictions on the press at any cost.

They said that access to information is the fundamental right as enshrined in the constitution. They demanded that the government allow independent reporting of events.

The union leaders said that it should be investigated that on whose orders Wazir was arrested at a time he was performing his professional duties.

The PFUJ leaders also condemned police violence on journalist Pervaiz Mughal on Wednesday during the coverage of Pakistan People's Party demonstration in Islamabad.

They said that such incidents undermine democracy and are tantamount to interference in the professional duties of journalists in a democratic government.
