ISLAMABAD — On the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has urged the federal and provincial governments to take concrete measures to ensure the safety and security of journalists and media workers across the country.
PFUJ President Afzal Butt and Secretary General Arshad Ansari expressed grave concern over the rising number of attacks on journalists, warning that the surge in crimes has created a climate of fear and intimidation that threatens press freedom and the public’s right to information. According to recent reports, violations against journalists and media professionals have increased by nearly 60 percent over the past year, with 142 cases recorded between November 2024 and September 2025.
“Today’s International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists reminds us that there can be no real press freedom without accountability for attacks against members of the media,” the PFUJ said.
The union called on the government to act immediately and adopt a comprehensive approach to end impunity. It urged authorities to protect journalists from threats and violence, investigate crimes in a timely and transparent manner, prosecute perpetrators, and provide justice and reparations to victims. PFUJ also stressed the need for fostering a safe and enabling environment where journalists can perform their duties without fear or intimidation.
The PFUJ reiterated that ending impunity is essential for safeguarding press freedom and upholding democratic values in Pakistan.
