ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has issued a show-cause notice to NewsOne Television for airing defamatory audio and video clips against Chairman of National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Justice (Retd) Javed Iqbal.
The regulator said in a press release that the ‘breaking news’ targeted the official and was shown allegedly in conversation with a woman.
However, later the channel aired an apology and said it had decided to stop airing the news as it was unconfirmed and unverified.
PEMRA said that airing such defamatory and false propaganda against the head of an important institution amounted to a violation of the code of conduct for electronic media. It pointed out that the licensee was obliged to ensure strict editorial control on the content aired.
It directed the channel to explain in writing within seven days its position and that why action should not be initiated against it. The organization’s CEO is also required to appear for a personal hearing on May 31.
