PEMRA fines Geo Rs100000, directs channel to air apology

ISLAMABAD – Regulator PEMRA Wednesday fined Geo News Rs100000 after guests on its show called two veteran politicians traitors.

This happened in the program Jirga, aired on February 12, 2017.

Guests Ijaz Mehmand and Nisar Mehmand called parliamentarians Mahmood Khan Achakzai and Maulana Fazlur Rehman traitors.

The channel management and program host Saleem Safi (pictured) have been asked to tender apology during the same time slot the program was telecast.

Geo is also required to scroll and display text on the screen during the entire program when Saleem Safi apologizes to viewers, PEMRA said.

The regulator warned Geo to be careful in selecting guests for its talk shows and brief them on the code of conduct.

PEMRA had issued a show-cause notice to the channel on February 17. After examining its written reply, Geo was found to have violated certain clauses of the code of conduct 2015.
