Amjad elected on AIPS executive body
Amjad Aziz Malik has been elected as a member of the AIPS Executive Committee during elections held in Sochi, Russia. This marks his second major success in six months.

SOCHI: Amjad Aziz Malik of Geo TV has been elected the Executive Committee member of the International Sports Journalists Association (AIPS). The elections were held in Sochi, Russia on April 17 with voting taking place electronically. In total, 104 countries took part in the voting procedure, the AIPS said.

There were 27 candidates for the 13 Executive Committee seats. Amjad won 38 votes in the first round while he bagged 52 in the second. This is his second major success in the past six months after earlier becoming the first Pakistani to be elected Vice President of the Asian Sports Press Union.

Amjad (picture, left), is also the Secretary General of Pakistan Sports Writers’ Federation (PSWF). He was instrumental in organizing an international sports journalists’ congress in Peshawar.

According to AIPS, 55 nominations have been received for 20 positions on the Executive Committee for the period 2013-2017.

The elections will be held on April 17 during the 76th annual AIPS Congress in Sochi from April 15 -19.

A senior journalist, Malik has covered major international events including the Olympic and Asian Games for radio, television and the print media.

President Gianni Merlo, unopposed for the position of AIPS chief, was unanimously reelected at the congress. The latest four- year office term became the third for Merlo. Esat Yilmaer of Turkey, remained in the position of the First Vice-President.

The President Sports Media Austria Michael Kuhn will join the executive as the AIPS treasurer.

Laima Janusonyte-Steinhoff (Lithuania), Nickolai Dolgopolov (Russia), Mohammad Al Malki (Qatar) and Haifeng Zhang (China), who were also part of the previous executive were elected Vice-Presidents.

The Executive Committee: Evelyn Watta (Kenya), Jalal Bouzrara (Morocco), Vicente Dattoli(Brazil), Dezso Dobor (Hungary), Emanuel Fantaneanu (Romania), Hee Dong Jung (Korea), Amjad Aziz Malik (Pakistan), Barry Newcombe (Great Britain), Ernesto Ortiz Gomez (Uruguay), Jura Ozmec (Croatia), Jean Paul Savart (France), Hiroshi Takeuchi (Japan), Abdulla Ibrahim Bin Hussain (UAE).
