Pakistan’s information minister says the man who harassed journalist Shahzeb Khanzada in Canada has been identified as a PTI worker, though BBC Urdu could not verify the claim.Summary
ISLAMABAD — Minister for Information Attaullah Tarar has said the individual who harassed Geo News journalist Shahzeb Khanzada in Canada has been identified, and claimed the person is affiliated with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf.
Speaking on Hum TV’s program Faisla Awam Ka, he said the man, originally from Gujranwala, works as a real estate or property agent in Ontario. Tarar asserted that legal action would be pursued, but BBC Urdu reported it had not independently verified the political affiliation he mentioned.
Incident sparked debate
Tarar’s comments follow a video that circulated widely on Pakistani social media showing a man confronting Khanzada at what appeared to be a clothing store. The video also showed Khanzada’s wife, actor Rushna Khan, present during the incident. The man recording the video criticized the journalist over his reporting related to Imran Khan and his spouse. The footage drew condemnation from several journalists.
Political response
PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar had earlier condemned the harassment. Tarar had also termed the behavior unacceptable, saying such individuals should be identified and dealt with. In a later interview with Geo News, the minister reiterated that authorities were working to establish the identity of the man involved.
