Matiullah Jan's two-day physical remand has been contested in the Islamabad High Court, with advocates claiming the charges are baseless. The case raises significant concerns regarding press freedom in Pakistan.

ISLAMABAD—A two-day physical remand of journalist Matiullah Jan, granted by the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC), has been challenged in the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

Advocate Imaan Zainab Mazari-Hazir, representing Matiullah Jan, filed a petition on Friday, asserting that the journalist was arrested in a "false and fabricated case." She argued that the allegations against him lack substance and appear to be an attempt to suppress press freedom.

On Thursday, the ATC approved a two-day physical remand of Matiullah Jan, transferring him to police custody for further investigation. This decision has sparked criticism, with press freedom advocates questioning the motives behind his arrest.

In her petition, Imaan Mazari emphasized the urgency of the matter, requesting the IHC to hear the case promptly. "Our request is to have the hearing today," she stated. "If the hearing is delayed until tomorrow or Monday, our petition will become ineffective."

The case has drawn widespread attention from human rights organizations and journalist unions, which are calling for Matiullah Jan's transparency and fair treatment.
