Maleeha Lodhi backs Mir Shakil-ur-Rehman, calls for his release
Former editor Maleeha Lodhi has expressed concern over the arrest of media tycoon Mir Shakil-ur-Rehman. She demands his immediate release, citing rule of law and free expression.

ISLAMABAD—Maleeha Lodhi, a former editor of The News, has termed the arrest of Jang-Geo Media Group owner Mir Shakil-ur-Rehman ‘disturbing’ and called for his immediate release.

In a tweet, she said that Shakil-ur-Rehman’s arrest was deeply disturbing when he was making himself available to answer allegations against him and not running away. “Justice demands that he is released asap. No justification to detain him when he is ready to answer all questions abt the alleged case.”

In another tweet, she said: “The rule of law, justice and the constitutional right to free expression demands the immediate release of Mir Shakilur Rahman.”

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) arrested the media tycoon on Wednesday in a 34-year-old property transaction.

Some circles point out that his arrest came because of his media group’s criticism of NAB.
