Legendary commentator Munir passes away
Munir Hussain, a trailblazer in Urdu cricket commentary, died at the age of 83 after a long illness. He made significant contributions to cricket media in Pakistan.

KARACHI: Pioneer of Urdu cricket commentary Munir Hussain died following a protracted illness. He was 83.

Munir (right, seen with Abdul Rehman Bukhatir of the Cricketers Benefit Fund Series) established himself as a commentator more than 40 years ago at a time when only English was the medium of cricket commentary.

He worked alongside popular English-language commentators Omer Kureishi and Chishty Mujhaid among others and earned a number of honors during his distinguished career.

He was declared PTV’s Best Urdu Commentator of the Decade (1985-95) and given the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation and a World Cup Legends Award presented by the Pakistan Cricket Board besides many other honors.

Munir also played club and domestic cricket and captained Kalat Division in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. At one time he headed the Karachi City Cricket Association (KCCA).

He also founded and edited Urdu cricket magazine Akhbar-e-Watan more than 35 years ago.
