Interior Minister orders probe into social media campaign against Chief Justice

The Interior Minister has directed the Federal Investigation Agency to probe a damaging social media campaign against Chief Justice Saqib Nisar. The decision follows a letter from the Attorney General highlighting misleading allegations against the Chief Justice.

Daily Pakistan Global reported the decision to launch an investigation came after a letter sent to the ministry by Attorney General for Pakistan (AGP) Secretary Khalid Khan Niazi.

A series of damaging images have been widely shared on the Internet. One such image shows President Mamnoon Hussain, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Governor Iqbal Zafar Jhagra.

As soon as the image was uploaded, people were duped into mistaking Zafar Iqbal Jhagra for Saqib Nisar due to an uncanny resemblance between the two, Daily Pakistan Global said.

“The said image is also being captioned with incorrect, misleading and slanderous allegations with respect to the CJP-designate Mian Saqib’s professional capabilities,” the letter says.

“Sharing of the image under such pretences also constitutes an attack on the superior judiciary of Pakistan, which adds to the gravity of the criminal acts. This trend needs to be checked,” the letter continued.
