Information Minister Tarar announces jobs for all 37 laid-off Nukta employees
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar announces jobs for all 37 Nukta employees following their termination, highlighting the lack of protection for digital journalists in Pakistan.

ISLAMABAD — Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar on Wednesday announced employment for all 37 Pakistani staff members of Nukta, a digital media platform that terminated them.

Speaking to reporters in Islamabad, Tarar said the government recognized that digital journalists lacked representation and job security. “Since there is no protection for digital media employees in the country, I announce jobs for all 37 employees of Nukta,” he said. “They will be employed, and within the next 48 hours, they will receive appointment letters for positions at digital platforms.”

His remarks follow news that Nukta, a promising digital media startup, has laid off approximately two dozen journalists and a dozen technical staff, including producers and associate producers. The layoffs triggered an outpouring of concern across Pakistan’s journalism community, with many journalists describing it as another blow to the country’s struggling independent media sector.

Tarar’s announcement is being seen as an attempt to address the growing uncertainty in Pakistan’s digital media landscape, where several independent news outlets face financial strain amid declining ad revenue and limited institutional support.

Industry observers welcomed the government’s move but cautioned that sustainable media reforms and transparent hiring processes were essential to genuinely strengthen digital journalism in Pakistan.
