Gharidah calls for women's representation on proposed media body
Television presenter Gharidah Farooqi advocates for the inclusion of women in a new media association in Pakistan. She emphasizes the need for diverse representation in decision-making to ensure equality.

ISLAMABAD — Television presenter Gharidah Farooqi has called for representation of women in the proposed association of news professionals.

She was prompted to do so after senior electronic media practitioners, all of them male, gathered in Lahore on Monday and decided to form an association to fight such challenges as freedom of expression.

Farooqi took to Twitter to make her point, and also posted a picture of the participants: “In this picture you see the brilliant minds who run the News Media industry in Pakistan. And yes not a single woman! In a country where around 50% population is female. This is what is only wrong here - a basic one. Inclusiveness is the key.”

In a preliminary meeting, the participants formed a core committee. It will prepare a draft constitution and contact media professionals in all channels. The association will be given a formal shape at the next meeting.

KEY POINTS:

  • Gharidah Farooqi addresses the lack of women in media association meetings.
  • The proposed association currently consists only of male members.
  • Farooqi highlights the importance of inclusiveness in media representation.
  • A core committee is formed to draft the constitution for the association.
  • The next meeting will formally establish the association.
