Dawn lifts the curtain on its 37-episode Independence feature

ISLAMABAD – Dawn on Sunday launched its 37-episode Independence feature with iconic images of partition on its front and back pages, a series the paper says will culminate in mid-August marking Pakistan’s 70th birthday.

Under the headline ‘Towards Partition: A Caravan to Freedom’, the paper ran a full front- page image showing large convoys of Sikh and Hindu refugees heading towards East Punjab and Muslims fleeing to the two wings of Pakistan.

The period Dawn plans to cover runs from 1906 to 1948 during which “the freedom movement emerged and subsequently achieved the creation of a separate Muslim state.”

The Dawn feature “flashes back to 1906, the foundation for the creation of the All India Muslim League – the party that took Pakistan to freedom under the dynamic leadership of Muhammad Ali Jinnah – the Quaid-i-Azam – the monumental founder of this nation."

The back page features another compelling image of convoys of refugees. The headline announces: ‘As we enter our 70th year, Pakistan’s story becomes your story’.

The paper says it is ‘A time to reflect. A time to celebrate.’
