CEJ appoints Amber Rahim Shamsi as its new director

KARACHI—The Center for Excellence in Journalism at the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) Karachi has announced the appointment of award-winning broadcast journalist Amber Rahim Shamsi as its new director.

In a tweet, IBA Executive Director, Dr. Akbar Zaidi, stated: "I am delighted to announce the appointment of Ms Amber Rahim Shamsi as the new Director Centre for Excellence in Journalism at the IBA."

According to him, the journalist brings vast and diverse experience, which will lead the CEJ to new heights.

The center had received 70 applications for the position of director. After scrutinizing these applications, 15 candidates were called for interviews, and IBA executive director constituted a regular committee for selection on merit.

The IBA shortlisted three female candidates, Najia Asher, Mona Khan, and Amber Rahim Shamsi.

With wide-ranging experience in television, radio, online, and the print media, Shamsi is also an International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) and the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) fellow.

Shamsi has hosted news and current affairs programs on mainstream news channels and writes for national and international media.

Previously, she was a bilingual reporter for the BBC World Service, television anchor, desk editor, and producer. Her reporting primarily focused on human rights. She has also written research reports and training manuals on women in the media, gender, and conflict reporting and conducted numerous media pieces of training.

The selection committee included senior journalist Mazhar Abbas, Dean of Economics and Social Sciences Dr. Asma Haider, and two faculty members.

Kamal Siddiqi, a former editor of The Express Tribune, served as director of the Center for Excellence in Journalism for five-and-a-half years before quitting in October 2021.
