ISLAMABAD – The Council of Complaints of PEMRA has recommended that 92 News be fined Rs500000 for airing an analysis it said was not based on facts, and for making baseless allegations against chairman National Accountability Bureau.

Senior journalists Rauf Klasra and Amir Mateen, featuring in the program Muqabil aired on June 13, had commented that NAB chief Qamaruz Zaman Chaudhry was drawing pension from the army for many years on the basis of a false affidavit.

The NAB boss furnished all documentary evidence, thereby satisfying the Council the pension was rightfully drawn and was in accordance to laid down rules and regulations, a PEMRA media release said. However, the channel’s management and the analysts failed to defend themselves, the release said.

The Council directed 92 News to air an apology and pay the required fine or face suspension/cancellation of its license.
