South Korea's CJ ENM expands global reach with Viu acquisition

SEOUL, South Korea—In a landmark move for the Asian media industry, South Korea's leading entertainment conglomerate, CJ ENM, has announced the acquisition of a majority stake in the popular streaming platform, Viu. This strategic acquisition, valued at approximately $1.2 billion, is set to significantly boost CJ ENM's global footprint in the streaming market and enhance its content distribution capabilities across Asia.

Viu, known for its extensive library of Asian dramas and variety shows, will now operate under the CJ ENM umbrella, benefiting from the conglomerate's vast resources and production expertise. The acquisition is expected to strengthen Viu's position in the competitive streaming landscape, enabling it to expand its original content offerings and enhance its technological infrastructure.

CJ ENM's CEO, Kang Ho-sung, commented on the acquisition, saying: "This is a pivotal moment for both CJ ENM and Viu. By combining our strengths, we aim to deliver superior content and a more immersive viewing experience to audiences across Asia and beyond."

Industry analysts anticipate that this merger will drive significant growth in the Asian streaming market, fostering more collaboration between regional content creators and leading to a surge in high-quality, original programming.
