NPC main hall to be named after Prof. Waris Mir

The National Press Club has decided to name its main hall after Waris Mir to honor his outstanding contributions. An endowment fund has also been initiated, benefitting journalists.

ISLAMABAD - Under a resolution passed during the general body meeting of the National Press Club Tuesday, it was decided to name the club’s main hall after late journalist, writer, and academic Waris Mir for his contribution to journalism and struggle for press freedom and democracy. Waris Mir’s three sons – Hamid Mir, Amir Mir, and Imran Mir – are all prominent journalists. A large number of members attended the meeting ahead of the annual elections. On the occasion, senior journalist Farooq Faisal Khan announced that an endowment fund would be made functional soon. He presented a cheque for Rs7700,000 to President Shakeel Anjum. The cheque has been given by Hamid Mir for the endowment fund, the amount being the approximate worth of Mir’s plot of land which is to be sold off by the club. Meanwhile, Afzal Butt, President of Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) announced that it was being planned to pay the club’s annual membership fee as a premium for getting insurance for journalists.
