Four press clubs in Balochistan closed down after threats from militants

QUETTA – Threats by militant groups to the media have led to the closure of at least four press clubs in Balochistan underlining the seriousness of the situation.

The press clubs in Gwadar, Panjgur, Kharan, and Dalbadin have all been shut down in the wake of serious threats.

The militants claim the media was only presenting the government’s point of view and had warned of armed action against them after October 24.

A day after that deadline passed, militants belonging to the Baloch Liberation Front hurled a hand grenade at the Hub Press Club. There was no loss of life or damage to property.

The Gwadar Press Club was closed for all kinds of activities for an indefinite period after a meeting of senior office-bearers.

Similarly, Kharan Press Club President Safar Khan Raskoi presided over a meeting attended by office-bearers and members. The house decided to lock up the club for an indefinite period.

Elsewhere, the Panjgur Press Club too was closed down just days after the Dalbadin Press Club announced its closure.
