PFUJ condemns Punjab’s Defamation Tribunals, calls law a threat to press freedom

ISLAMABAD — The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has strongly condemned the Punjab government’s recent notification establishing three Defamation Tribunals under the controversial Defamation Law. The union called the move a direct attack on press freedom and an attempt to silence critical voices.

In a joint statement, PFUJ President Afzal Butt and Secretary General Arshad Ansari reiterated their long-standing opposition to the law, describing it as a “black law” that undermines journalistic independence and freedom of expression.

“The establishment of special tribunals under this law will only exacerbate the already dire situation for media professionals in Pakistan,” the PFUJ leaders warned.

The union expressed deep concern over a notice issued to Arshad Ansari and several crime reporters in Lahore, viewing it as a clear attempt by the government to intimidate and harass journalists. PFUJ stressed that this is not about individuals but about the rights of the entire journalist community.

PFUJ has demanded the immediate repeal of the Defamation Law and the abolition of the tribunals, urging the government to instead take concrete measures to protect journalists and uphold their safety. The union reminded the authorities that freedom of the press and freedom of expression are fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution.

Declaring solidarity with all journalists and media organizations affected by the law, PFUJ vowed to continue its struggle against what it termed “draconian measures” and to advocate for a free and independent press in Pakistan.
