Global media unite as WAN-IFRA and FIPP complete merger
WAN-IFRA and FIPP have completed a historic merger, forming an extensive global alliance of over 20,000 media brands. This consolidation aims to enhance press freedom advocacy and collaboration in the media sector.

FRANKFURT, Germany — The World Association of News Publishers and the International Federation of Periodical Publishers have completed a landmark merger effective January 1, 2026, creating the largest global alliance of media organisations in history. The consolidation unites more than 20,000 media brands and technology companies across more than 120 countries, expanding the reach and influence of the combined group.

The merger is intended to strengthen collective advocacy for press freedom, enhance resources for members, and foster collaboration across both news and magazine sectors at a time of rapid technological change and industry disruption.

New alliance aims to address shared industry challenges

Leaders of the merged organisation said the strategic integration responds to evolving pressures facing the media landscape, from digital transformation to audience engagement and monetisation strategies. The combined entity provides a unified platform for members to share best practices, innovate, and address common challenges.

Under the merger arrangement, FIPP will retain its identity within the new structure, with its congress and dedicated services preserved for the special interest media community. Former FIPP members will be part of a new community called Consumer Lifestyle and Special Interest Media.

Leaders highlight collaboration and press freedom

WAN-IFRA President Ladina Heimgartner described the merger as a pivotal moment for the global media industry, emphasizing that united efforts bolster the capacity to defend independent journalism and create growth opportunities. FIPP Chair Yulia Boyle said the integration gives the magazine and special interest media sector greater strength in numbers while preserving its core strengths.

The merger also safeguards key industry events and initiatives, including the annual FIPP Congress, and integrates established training programs into WAN-IFRA’s broader offerings. Members will gain access to an enhanced knowledge hub featuring expert insights and best practices from news and magazine sectors alike.

The new global alliance underscores a shared commitment to advancing sustainable and independent media, while providing a more powerful collective voice to engage with policy, technology platforms, and industry stakeholders around the world.
