Press freedom deteriorates in Nepal as violations triple in 2025
Press freedom in Nepal faced a severe decline in 2025, with violations more than tripling. The Federation of Nepali Journalists reported alarming incidents affecting both journalists and media organizations.

KATHMANDU — Press freedom violations in Nepal more than tripled in 2025, according to data released by the Federation of Nepali Journalists, underscoring growing risks for reporters and media organizations operating in a volatile political environment.

The FNJ recorded 139 incidents during the year, affecting 118 journalists and 31 media outlets, a sharp increase compared with previous annual figures. The organization said the pattern reflects a deteriorating climate for independent reporting.

Killings and serious attacks on journalists

Two journalists were killed while on duty in 2025, marking one of the gravest developments for media safety in the country. The FNJ said the deaths highlight persistent failures to protect journalists and ensure accountability for crimes against the press.

Beyond the killings, numerous journalists reported intimidation, threats, and physical attacks while covering political unrest and protests. The incidents affected reporters across different media platforms, including print, broadcast, and online outlets.

Impunity and pressure during political unrest

The FNJ linked many of the violations to heightened political tensions and street protests, where journalists faced hostility from multiple sides while attempting to report on unfolding events. It said the lack of effective investigations has contributed to a sense of impunity for attacks on media workers.

In its assessment, the FNJ warned that continued pressure on journalists could weaken public access to reliable information. It called for stronger legal protections, prompt investigations into attacks, and clearer commitments from authorities to uphold press freedom.
