Notice served on DawnNews for defying PEMRA ban
PEMRA served a show-cause notice to DawnNews for continuing to air Zara Hut Kay despite a three-day ban. This ban was imposed after the program discussed sensitive judicial issues.

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has served a show-cause notice on DawnNews for defying a ban imposed on its program, Zara Hut Kay.

The three-day ban coming into effect on March 22 was violated as the channel continued to air the program on all three days.

This was seen as “willful defiance” by the regulator which has now given the channel three days to explain why it defied its orders.

The ban on the program was imposed after its anchors discussed a reference pending before the Supreme Judicial Council against Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui of Islamabad High Court.

The trio of Mubashir Zaidi, Wusatullah Khan, and Zara Khoro discussed the reference in their program aired on March 9.

KEY POINTS:

  • PEMRA issued a notice due to a violation of a media ban.
  • The ban on Zara Hut Kay was active from March 22.
  • DawnNews aired the program on all three days of the ban.
  • The ban followed discussions about a case involving Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui.
  • Channel has three days to respond to the regulator's notice.
