Nominations open for IPI’s 2025 Press Freedom Awards
The International Press Institute has announced that nominations for the 2025 Press Freedom Awards are now open. The awards will honor exceptional journalists and media organizations committed to press freedom.

The International Press Institute (IPI) and International Media Support (IMS) proudly invite nominations for the 2025 World Press Freedom Hero Award and Free Media Pioneer Award.

Both prestigious awards will be presented at a special ceremony during IPI’s 2025 World Congress, scheduled for October 23-25 in Vienna. This year’s Congress marks IPI’s 75th anniversary—a significant milestone celebrating the past and present champions of journalism and press freedom.

As in previous years, an expert international jury will select the winners.

About the Awards

The World Press Freedom Hero Award recognizes journalists who have contributed remarkably to press freedom, often at great personal risk. In 2024, this honor was awarded to Palestinian journalists covering the Gaza war, acknowledging their exceptional bravery in extreme conditions.

Past recipients of this prestigious accolade include Carmen Aristegui, Anna Politkovskaya, Carlos Dada, Katherine Graham, Hrant Dink, Harold Evans, and Veronica Guerin.

The IPI-IMS Free Media Pioneer Award celebrates organizations innovating in journalism, media, and press freedom advocacy. These entities play a critical role in advancing independent journalism and enhancing the free flow of information in their communities.

Last year’s award recognized Kloop, an independent news outlet in Kyrgyzstan, for its fearless investigative journalism and unwavering commitment to democratic principles for nearly two decades.

Notable past winners include Myanmar Now, Rappler (Philippines), Medyascope (Turkey), the Afghan Journalists Safety Committee, The Wire (India), and Ukraine’s independent media.

How to Nominate

IPI and IMS welcome nominations from all over the world. To nominate a candidate for the 2025 awards, send an email to [email protected] by April 30 (23:59 CEST) with the subject line “World Press Freedom Hero nomination” or “Free Media Pioneer nomination.” Include a brief description of the nominee (individual or organization).

The World Press Freedom Hero Award is exclusively for individuals.

The Free Media Pioneer Award is open to individuals, teams, media organizations, or groups advocating press freedom.

Deadline for submissions: April 30, 2025
