ISLAMABAD: Senior journalist, writer and film producer Ali Sufiyan Afaqi passed away Tuesday in Lahore. He was 82 and is survived by two daughters and a wife, Dawn reported Wednesday.

He was suffering from cancer and had to be in hospital for the last four days after getting his hip bone fractured. Late Afaqi started his career in journalism at daily Tasneem, the then mouthpiece of Jamat-i-Islami. He also served as editor of weekly Aqwam of Meem Sheen, and was joint editor daily Aasar, published by Maulana Zafar Ali Khan’s grandson Mansoor Ali Khan after the closure of Zamindar.

In 1957, he made his first ever movie “Thandi Sarak” that was directed by Shabab Kiranvi with story and dialogues by Afaqi. With the imposition of martial law in 1958, he left journalism and formally joined film industry as a storywriter.

Afaqi has also been awarded with prestigious awards that include Nigar Award, Graduate Award, Film Critic Award and Mussawir Award.
