The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), in partnership with the Scripps Howard Foundation, is offering full scholarships to international applicants for the University of Maryland’s prestigious Howard Center for Investigative Journalism Data Training Program.
This comprehensive online program—starting in August 2025—aims to equip mid-career journalists with cutting-edge skills in data-driven storytelling, automation, and AI. The curriculum consists of four online courses and a final project, with the first term beginning in August 2025 and the second in January 2026. Participants will have six months to complete each course.
The training modules will cover essential topics such as data sourcing, visualization, text analysis, API usage, AI tools, and computational thinking in journalism. Tools like Flourish, Datawrapper, and other advanced software will be used to teach visual storytelling and automated reporting techniques.
In addition to coursework, scholarship recipients will engage in monthly virtual discussions led by ICFJ and gain access to prominent voices in the global journalism community.
Eligibility Criteria:
Minimum of five years’ experience in investigative journalism
Working-level proficiency in English
Open to journalists from outside the United States, including freelancers
Applications must be submitted through the official ICFJ form
