Too little too late: Nawa-e-Waqt staffers get one-month wage
Nawa-e-Waqt newspaper staff received their July 2019 wages after a long wait. Many employees are struggling with eight months of unpaid salaries.

ISLAMABAD — A senior journalist has questioned the Nawa-e-Waqt newspaper management’s decision to pay July 2019 wages to its staff while not disbursing salaries for the first six months of the year.

Khaleeq Kiani, who works for Dawn, disclosed in a tweet on Wednesday that the staff was paid the July salary on Wednesday. But he wondered where did the six months of unpaid wages go.

Kiani has regularly highlighted the plight of Nawa-e-Waqt workers who have gone eight months without getting paid.

A one-month wage for cash-starved employees seems too little too late as many of them have reportedly withdrawn their children from schools, and some have sent their wives and children back to their native villages.

KEY POINTS:

  • Nawa-e-Waqt staff received July wages amidst financial distress.
  • Employees have not been paid for the first six months of 2019.
  • Khaleeq Kiani highlights the ongoing struggles of Nawa-e-Waqt workers.
  • Many staff members have withdrawn their children from school.
  • Employees face severe hardships due to prolonged unpaid salaries.
