PFUJ remembers Nisar Osmani: 31 years on, his legacy for press freedom lives on

ISLAMABAD — The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has paid glowing tributes to its legendary leader, Nisar Osmani, as it marked his 31st death anniversary on Thursday.
“Today, we remember the fearless and upright legendary journalist Nisar Osmani, who left us while fighting for freedom of expression and the rights of working journalists on this day 31 years ago,” PFUJ said in a statement, terming him a “shining example of journalistic integrity.”
PFUJ President Afzal Butt and Secretary General Arshad Ansari noted that Osmani’s life coincided with the passage of the repressive Press Act of 1931 under British rule — a law he dedicated his career to resisting. As a journalist, lecturer, and trade unionist, Osmani fearlessly opposed oppressive press laws, challenged military dictators such as General Ziaul Haq, and stood firm against authoritarian civilian governments.
Over a career spanning more than four decades, Osmani became a towering figure in Pakistani journalism, tirelessly advocating for press freedom, ethical journalism, and workers’ rights. His unwavering principles earned him nationwide and international respect from journalists, intellectuals, and human rights organizations alike.
The PFUJ described Osmani’s contributions as a “beacon of light” for the journalism community.
“Not only will his struggle for freedom of the press and democratic rights always be remembered, but PFUJ will continue to follow in his footsteps,” the statement said.
The union further added: “His courage, integrity, and dedication to democratic values inspire us to continue our struggle for press freedom and workers’ rights. We not only honour his legacy but also reaffirm our commitment to upholding the principles he stood for.”
Remembering his humility, intellectual honesty, and fearless courage, PFUJ expressed hope that Osmani’s memory will inspire future generations to safeguard press freedom, democracy, and intellectual independence in Pakistan.
