ISLAMABAD—The Islamabad High Court on Monday issued notices to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), and journalists Gharidah Farooqi, Hasan Ayub, and Ammar Solangi in a contempt of court case regarding a social media campaign against Justice Tariq Mahmood Jahangiri.
Heading the bench, IHC Chief Justice Amir Farooq questioned the role of institutions in addressing campaigns against judges. "PTA, PEMRA, and FIA do not see what is happening?" he asked.
The larger IHC bench is hearing the contempt of court case concerning allegations of a fake degree against Justice Jahangiri circulating on social media. Justice Amir Farooq stated that he would not tolerate the ongoing campaign.
Justice Mian Gul Hasan Aurangzeb noted that the government's silence indicates complicity. He added that the law minister and information minister have not commented on the issue.
Chief Justice Amir Farooq expressed his frustration with the lack of action from relevant authorities, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the integrity and respect of the judiciary. "Such baseless allegations and campaigns not only tarnish the reputation of our judges but also undermine public confidence in the judicial system," he said.
Justice Aurangzeb reiterated the need for a prompt and thorough investigation into the matter.
The court's decision to issue notices to PTA, PEMRA, and the mentioned journalists underscores the seriousness with which the judiciary is treating this case.
