KARACHI - To improve the understanding of data among business journalists, the Centre for Excellence in Journalism (CEJ) and the Overseas Investors Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OICCI) held a one-day workshop on ‘Data and its significance in Business Reporting’ on Wednesday.
Eighteen journalists covering the business sector for various print and broadcast media organizations attended the workshop.
The main trainer for the workshop was Khurram Husain, business editor and columnist for Dawn newspaper. “Working with data is a key part of business journalism, so continuous training in this area is important to keep the profession updated on new data sources and techniques being used in the market,” he said.
The Secretary-General/CE of the OICCI, M Aleem Khan, gave the participants an overview of Pakistan’s economy and how it is perceived by overseas investors. “Journalists should portray a positive image of Pakistan, which is imperative to attract foreign investors into the country,” suggested Khan.
Muhammad Asim, the chief investment officer for MCB Arif Habib Savings and Investments Limited, delivered a lecture on reading financial documents. While conducting an interactive session on visualizing data stories, CEJ lecturer Shahzeb Ahmed, said: “Journalists should know how to work with data as this is where the future of journalism lies.”
The workshop concluded with a certificate distribution ceremony and a feedback session. - A CEJ-IBA media release
