ISLAMABAD: Ashfaq Ahmed, a woker of Jang Group, has been elected as president of Multan Press Club in a close contest. He secured 235 votes while his rival Shakeel Anjum bagged 233 votes.
A member of the club told JournalismPakistan.com that over 300 bogus votes were removed from the electoral list before the elections. As many as 527 members were declared as genuine and allowed to cast votes.
“Professional journalists have been pressing the club’s management to discard the bogus votes and finally it happened before the elections,” he said.
Anjum’s group was accused of threatening the election committee and disrupting the vote counting process.
“A large contingent of police was deployed outside the press club to avert any untoward incident as the election committee chairman Raziuddin Razi informed the police about the threats hurled by Anjum and his group,” he said.
According to the official results, Mirza Nadim was elected as General Secretary, Shahid Sitho (Senior Vice President), Gohar Javed (Vice President), Agha Muhammad Ali (Joint Secretary), and Sajjad Khokhar (Finance Secretary).
Members elected to the executive body of the club include Rauf Maan, Ejaz Tareen, Fazeel Sahu, Mazhar Khan, Rana Pervez, Nisar Awan, Rao Asad, Adnan Qureshi, Memona Saeed, Ayaz Shaikh, and Humaira Shafiq.
