Cyril Almeida, a journalist with Dawn, has been named the 71st World Press Freedom Hero by the International Press Institute. He faces treason charges due to his coverage of significant events in Pakistan.

The International Press Institute (IPI) has named Cyril Almeida, a journalist with Dawn, as its 71st World Press Freedom Hero.

Egyptian news site Mada Masr claimed the 2019 Free Media Pioneer Award.

Almeida, an editor and columnist is facing treason charges following his tenacious coverage of events in Pakistan.

According to IPI, Mada Masr has courageously defied Egypt’s media crackdown to deliver independent, investigative news to a public otherwise starved of it.

The awards will be presented during a ceremony in Geneva on June 5.

IPI’s World Press Freedom Hero Award honors journalists who have made significant contributions to the promotion of press freedom, particularly in the face of considerable personal risk.
