ISLAMABAD: Umar Cheema, an investigative reporter at The News is among speakers listed for the First Asian Investigative Journalism Conference due to take place in Manila, Philippines this month.

The three-day conference slated for November 22-24 is titled Uncovering Asia and will bring together investigative reporters, data journalists, and media law and security experts from Asia and other parts of the world.

According to uncoveringasia.org, Cheema will speak on November 23 on 'Corruption, Cover-ups and Incompetence' that cost society billions of dollars every day. The following day his topic will be 'Fighting back: Legal tools and more' - in context of attacks on journalists, growing surveillance and governments going backwards on free expression.

Cheema was beaten black and blue in 2010 for writing stories critical of the government. He however, showed great courage and has continued to produce hard-hitting investigative stories since.
