Submissions open for prestigious Global Shining Light Award

The Global Investigative Journalism Network (GIJN) has announced that submissions are now open for the highly regarded Global Shining Light Award, which celebrates investigative journalism conducted in developing or transitioning countries under extraordinary conditions such as threats, duress, or severe challenges.

The award recognizes excellence across two distinct categories:

Small & Medium Outlets: For organizations with 20 or fewer staff, including freelancers.
Large Outlets: For organizations with more than 20 staff.

Top winners in each category will receive:

An honorary plaque
A cash prize of US$2,500
A fully funded trip to the Global Investigative Journalism Conference 2025 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to be held in November, where the winners will be honored in the presence of international journalism peers.

Entries must fulfill the following requirements:

Originate in and significantly impact a Global South country.
Be published or broadcast between January 1, 2023, and December 31, 2024.
Demonstrate an investigative approach to uncovering critical issues, corruption, or systemic wrongdoings that deeply affect the public good.
Showcase resilience by working under threats, arrests, violence, or intimidation.

Due to high submission volumes, entries must include online links to work samples. For samples unavailable as public links, applicants can use platforms like Google Drive or Dropbox to upload and share documents.

For non-English submissions, an English-language summary of the work or an English transcript of the broadcast is mandatory. Any technical issues or queries can be addressed by contacting the award team at shininglightaward@gijn.org.

Deadline: February 28, 2025.
