EU offers funding for cross-border journalism projects
EU's Journalism Partnerships funding call supports cross-border media consortia for collaborative reporting, newsroom innovation and new business models. The scheme aims to strengthen public-interest journalism and media resilience across European countries.

BRUSSELS — The European Commission is currently accepting applications under its Journalism Partnerships – Collaborations funding call, which opened in October 2025 and remains open to cross-border media consortia seeking support for collaborative journalism and newsroom innovation projects across Europe. While the program is limited to European countries, it offers insights into trends in media sustainability and cross-border cooperation that are relevant to news organizations worldwide.

The call is part of the EU’s ongoing effort to strengthen public-interest journalism and support media outlets facing economic and technological pressures. It targets partnerships that bring together organizations from multiple European countries to work on collaborative reporting, newsroom transformation, or new business models that can improve resilience and audience engagement.

Strengthening cross-border journalism

Projects supported under the scheme are expected to demonstrate clear cross-border value, whether through joint investigative work, shared editorial resources, or collaborative approaches to audience development and revenue generation. The initiative encourages cooperation between media outlets that face similar challenges but operate in different national contexts, enabling journalism that would be difficult to achieve individually.

The program is open to a range of media actors, including news publishers, broadcasters, and digital-native outlets, provided they form a consortium with partners in other eligible European countries. The focus is on projects that contribute to long-term sustainability rather than short-term content production.

Innovation and newsroom transformation

In addition to collaborative reporting, the call explicitly supports proposals centered on media transformation and newsroom innovation. This includes experimentation with new workflows, digital tools, audience engagement strategies, and organizational models that can improve efficiency and editorial impact without compromising journalistic standards. Funded projects are expected to generate practical lessons that can be shared more broadly within the European media sector.

Deadline and relevance for media organizations

Applications for the Journalism Partnerships – Collaborations call must be submitted by February 4, 2026. While restricted to European organizations, the call illustrates how funding can enable cross-border partnerships and innovation in the media sector, offering lessons for outlets globally. For media organizations facing shrinking revenues, platform dependency, and rising production costs, it represents a model for collaborative approaches to sustainability and newsroom innovation.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: February 4, 2026
