Dr. Nauman Niaz is the Sports Editor at JournalismPakistan.com. Enigmatic, passionate and one of more prominent cricket correspondents, anchorpersons, broadcasters and a hard-fisted journalist he worked as Director Sports & Syndication of the Pakistan Television and as head of PTV Sports, a 24/7 specialized channel.
Dr. Niaz rose to prominence in the mid-1990s first working as a correspondent for The News International and consequently hosting pre and post shows for the state-run Pakistan Television. It was just the start. After demobilization, Dr. Niaz besides covering a handful of international cricket tours also settled to work as an anchorperson for top sports channels including ESPN, Tensports, Television NZ, Grenada Television, Zee TV, ESPN, Star India, Trans World International, World Tel International and a handful of others.
Dr. Niaz attended Covenant Jesus & Mary, Aitchison College Lahore prior to completing his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from the Rawalpindi Medical College, his Membership of the Royal College of Physicians United Kingdom, Fellowship Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh, Fellowship Royal College of Physicians London, Fellowship Royal College of Physicians Ireland, Fellowship Royal College of Physicians Glasgow, PhD from University of Western Australia and Post Doctorate from the University of Oxford.
Groomed by Dr. Maleeha Lodhi and Imran Naeem Ahmad at The News International and by the late Omar Kurieshi as a commentator, taught to write match reports by Imtiaz Spira and first taken to television commentary by Chisty Mujahid, Dr. Niaz remains one of the few distinguished people having shared mic with the irrefutably greats like Tony Cozier, Christopher Martin Jenkins, Tony Greig even Richie Benaud in different radio shows and the commentary boxes.
Dr. Niaz is the Official Historian of Pakistan Cricket, the Fluctuating Fortunes IV Volumes (4768 pages) printed and inaugurated in 2005 by the then Prime Minister Islamic Republic of Pakistan Mr. Shaukat Aziz.
Dr. Niaz had contributed over 3500 articles for some top newspapers including Sydney Herald, the Hindu, Saudi Gazette, Khaleej Times even the Wisden Alamanack. Dr. Niaz’s signature show GAME ON HAI on PTV Sports saw a gauntlet of top international ex-cricketers appearing alongside him. By temperament not conciliatory he was often involved in controversies. He is renowned among his broadcasting colleagues for a certain style, often unintimidated.
For excellence in sports journalism and broadcasting Dr. Niaz was awarded Tamgha-i-Imtiaz in 2014. Dr. Niaz has written 14 books (12 on cricket) and the last was extensively welcomed in England titled ‘Collector’s Eye’ Volume I and II. It’s a document on his cricket memorabilia, the largest personal collection in the world hosting 8500 books on cricket as old as 1780s to the modern day, most of them inscribed and hand-signed besides stacking another 9000 first editions and the rarest, including complete sets of Jean Paul Sartre, History of Western Civilization by Aerial and William Durant, the Honoré’ de Balzac, Makepeace Thackrey, Bertrand Russel, the Great Books, History of Western Europe, and some extraordinary classics. He is in possession of the match-played bats of Sir Donald Bradman, Dr. W.G. Grace, Gilbert Jessop, Victor Trumper, Clem Hill, Len Hutton, Frank Worrell, Hanif Mohammad, to the modern day superstars Brian Lara, Vivian Richards, Rahul Dravid, Virat Kohli and whole loads cricketana pertaining to Pakistan cricket.
