LAHORE: Group Editor of Urdu-language Daily Express, Syed Abbas Ather died of cancer here at the Combined Military Hospital on Monday. He was 74.
A renowned journalist and columnist, Abbas joined the profession in 1962. Working for several national dailies, he gained prominence in 1970 for his headline 'Idhar Hum, Udhur Tum' - a line that Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto reportedly said to Sheikh Mujeebur Rehman during their last meeting in Dhaka.
He previously worked for Nawa-e-Waqt and Mashriq and a number of other Urdu newspapers. After Gen Ziaul Haq’s martial law, he went into exile.
Abbas also held a number of positions in different journalis associations during his career. He also wrote a poem 'Bhutto Ke Beti Ayee Thee’ on the assassination of Benazir Bhutto. The poem won him the President’s Award for Pride of Performance.
He was also a current affairs television analyst.
