Journalist killed in India after land sales report

NEW DELHI—Journalist and Right To Information activist Raghvendra Bajpai was killed in a targeted attack on March 8 while travelling near Sitapur, with the journalist’s family stating they believe the killing could be related to his reporting on irregularities in rice paddy sales. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and its affiliates, the Indian Journalists Union (IJU), and the National Union of Journalists – India (NUJ-I),  strongly condemn the murder and call on authorities to conduct an urgent and through investigation into the killing, ensuring that those responsible are held to account.

Raghvendra Bajpai was fatally shot on March 8 at approximately 3:15 pm, shortly after receiving a phone call and travelling on the Sitapur-Delhi National Highway in Uttar Pradesh to meet a land tax collector. Unknown assailants riding a motorcycle rammed Bajpai’s own motorcycle, shooting him at least three times in the upper abdomen after he had fallen.

Bajpai was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. A police official speaking with the Hindustan Times said that footage of the incident showed two men riding a motorcycle and a jeep following the journalist minutes before he was killed.

Members of the journalist’s family have reportedly stated they suspect the killing was related to his reporting on alleged irregularities in rice paddy sales and stamp duties in the state’s central-north, which resulted in the suspension of four local administrative officials. Police have stated that neither Bajpai nor his family had received threats prior to his killing, and said in a preliminary probe that the killing could be related to a land dispute.

Police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against unidentified persons for murder, forming four teams in Maholi and neighbouring towns in Sitapur district to take the accused into custody. 12 people, including a retired army personnel and three lekhpals, local land administrators, have been detained for questioning since March 8.

The IFJ has confirmed the killing of one other journalist in India related to their work in 2025. On January 3, the body of freelance journalist Mukesh Chandrakar was discovered in the central Indian state of Chhatisgarh, with police suspecting the case was related to a report on irregularities in a road construction project.  

The IJU said: “ The killers of Raghavendra Bajpai must be brought to book with exemplary punishment. The IJU leaders express grave concern at the deteriorating press freedom situation and rampant media right violations in Uttar Pradesh by state and non-state actors.”

NUJ-I President Ras Bihari said:“The NUJ-I condemns the murder and demands justice, as well as financial assistance of 1 crore for Bajpai's family. This tragic incident highlights the dangers faced by journalists in their line of work and serves as a reminder of the importance of press freedom.”

IFJ General Secretary Anthony Bellanger said:“Exposing irregularities in government dealings is a clear example of public interest journalism, and the fact that the efforts of Raghvendra Bajpai resulted in his murder is both an outrage and a tragedy. Uttar Pradesh and Federal authorities must do their utmost to ensure that those responsible are not allowed to escape with impunity and ensure the safety of journalists.”

ہندوستانی صحافی راگھویندرا بجپئی کو نشانہ بنا کر قتل کر دیا گیا

نئی دہلی—صحافی اور حقِ اطلاعات کے کارکن راگھویندرا بجپئی 8 مارچ کو ستاپور کے قریب سفر کے دوران ایک حملے میں مارے گئے۔ ان کے اہل خانہ کا کہنا ہے کہ ان کا قتل چاول کی فروخت میں بے ضابطگیوں سے متعلق ان کی رپورٹنگ کا نتیجہ ہو سکتا ہے۔

انٹرنیشنل فیڈریشن آف جرنلسٹس اور اس کے الحاق شدہ ادارے، انڈین جرنلسٹس یونین اور نیشنل یونین آف جرنلسٹس – انڈیا  نے اس وحشیانہ قتل کی شدید مذمت کرتے ہوئے حکام سے فوری اور مکمل تحقیقات کا مطالبہ کیا ہے تاکہ مجرموں کو انصاف کے کٹہرے میں لایا جا سکے۔

راگھویندرا بجپئی کو 8 مارچ کی سہ پہر تقریباً 3:15 بجے گولی مار کر ہلاک کیا گیا۔ وہ ستاپور-دہلی نیشنل ہائی وے پر ایک لینڈ ٹیکس کلیکٹر سے ملنے جا رہے تھے جب نامعلوم حملہ آوروں نے موٹر سائیکل پر ان کی سواری کو ٹکر ماری اور انہیں گرنے کے بعد تین گولیاں مار دیں۔

انہیں فوری طور پر قریبی اسپتال منتقل کیا گیا مگر ڈاکٹروں نے انہیں مردہ قرار دے دیا۔ پولیس کے مطابق، جائے وقوعہ کی فوٹیج میں دو مسلح موٹر سائیکل سواروں کو صحافی کا تعاقب کرتے اور ان کے قتل سے چند لمحے قبل ایک جیپ کو ان کا پیچھا کرتے ہوئے دیکھا جا سکتا ہے۔

بجپئی کے اہل خانہ کا کہنا ہے کہ ان کا قتل ریاست کے وسطی شمالی علاقوں میں چاول کی فروخت اور اسٹامپ ڈیوٹی میں مبینہ بے ضابطگیوں پر ان کی رپورٹنگ کا نتیجہ ہو سکتا ہے، جس کے نتیجے میں چار مقامی انتظامی افسران کو معطل کر دیا گیا تھا۔ پولیس کا کہنا ہے کہ بجپئی یا ان کے اہل خانہ کو پہلے کسی قسم کی دھمکی موصول نہیں ہوئی تھی، اور ابتدائی تحقیقات میں اس واقعے کو زمین کے تنازع سے جوڑا جا رہا ہے۔

پولیس نے نامعلوم افراد کے خلاف قتل کا مقدمہ درج کر کے سیتاپور کے مختلف علاقوں میں چار ٹیمیں تشکیل دی ہیں تاکہ ملزمان کو گرفتار کیا جا سکے۔ اب تک 12 افراد، جن میں ایک ریٹائرڈ فوجی اور تین مقامی لینڈ ایڈمنسٹریٹر شامل ہیں، کو پوچھ گچھ کے لیے حراست میں لیا جا چکا ہے۔

آئی ایف جےکے مطابق، 2025 میں بھارت میں صحافیوں کے خلاف یہ دوسرا مہلک حملہ ہے۔ اس سے قبل 3 جنوری کو چھتیس گڑھ میں فری لانس صحافی مکیش چندراکر کی لاش ملی تھی، اور پولیس کا خیال تھا کہ ان کا قتل ایک سڑک تعمیراتی منصوبے میں بے ضابطگیوں سے متعلق رپورٹنگ کے باعث ہوا۔

  آئی جے یو نے کہا: "راگھویندرا بجپئی کے قاتلوں کو عبرتناک سزا دی جانی چاہیے۔ ہم اتر پردیش میں آزادی صحافت کی بگڑتی ہوئی صورتحال اور ریاستی و غیر ریاستی عناصر کے ہاتھوں میڈیا کے خلاف ہونے والی خلاف ورزیوں پر شدید تشویش کا اظہار کرتے ہیں۔

  این یو جے-آئی کے صدر راس بہاری نے کہا: "ہم اس وحشیانہ قتل کی شدید مذمت کرتے ہیں اور بجپئی کے اہل خانہ کے لیے ایک کروڑ روپے کی مالی امداد کا مطالبہ کرتے ہیں۔ یہ المناک واقعہ صحافیوں کو درپیش خطرات کی نشاندہی کرتا ہے اور آزادی صحافت کی اہمیت کو اجاگر کرتا ہے۔

  آئی ایف جےکے جنرل سیکرٹری انتھونی بیلینجر نے کہا: "حکومتی معاملات میں بے ضابطگیوں کو بے نقاب کرنا عوامی مفاد کی صحافت کی ایک بہترین مثال ہے، اور یہ انتہائی افسوسناک اور افسوسناک امر ہے کہ راگھویندرا بجپئی کو اپنی جان گنوانی پڑی۔ اتر پردیش اور مرکزی حکومت کو قاتلوں کو انصاف کے کٹہرے میں لانے اور صحافیوں کی حفاظت کو یقینی بنانے کے لیے ہر ممکن اقدام اٹھانا چاہیے۔"
