Trump administration orders furloughs at US-funded broadcasters, including VOA
The Trump administration's decision to furlough staff at US-funded broadcasters like VOA marks a significant reduction in federal support for media. Critics argue this move undermines the critical mission of providing unbiased information globally.

ISLAMABAD—The Trump administration announced on Saturday that it would furlough employees of US-funded broadcasters, including long-standing organizations such as Voice of America (VOA) and its Urdu service.

Hundreds of staff members from VOA, Radio Free Asia, Radio Free Europe, and other outlets received an email on Saturday informing them that they were barred from entering their offices and must return their press passes and office-issued equipment.

The decision comes as part of President Trump’s broader efforts to cut federal funding. He had already halted funding for the US Global Aid Agency and the Department of Education. On Friday, he issued an executive order designating the US Agency for Global Media (USAGM) as part of the “elements of federal bureaucracy deemed unnecessary.”

In addition to USAGM, Trump’s order included agencies such as the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Interagency Council on Homelessness, the Community Development Financial Institutions Fund, and the Minority Business Development Agency.

VOA Director Michael Abramowitz confirmed that he was among the 1,300 individuals furloughed. Expressing his disappointment, he stated, “I am saddened that for the first time in 83 years, Voice of America is being silenced.” He added that while VOA needed thoughtful reforms, Saturday’s move would hinder its critical mission. VOA broadcasts in 48 languages and reaches an estimated 360 million people weekly.

The decision sparked criticism from media leaders. The head of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, which was established during the Cold War to counter Soviet propaganda, described the funding cuts as a “great gift to America’s enemies.”

Grant Turner, the former Chief Financial Officer of the US Agency for Global Media, referred to the move as a “bloody week” for these media offices.

Radio Free Asia, founded in 1996, has played a crucial role in providing uncensored reporting in countries with strict media controls, such as China, Myanmar, North Korea, and Vietnam.

Like other budget-cutting measures by the Trump administration, the move to dismantle US-funded media could face legal challenges. The power to control federal spending lies with Congress, not the President, and some of these media outlets, particularly Radio Free Asia, have historically received bipartisan support.

According to US National Public Radio, federally funded media networks operating in the Middle East and Cuba broadcast in 63 languages across more than 100 countries.
