PFUJ welcomes Kenyan court's ruling in Arshad Sharif case

ISLAMABAD—The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has welcomed the Kenyan High Court's decision to award compensation to the family of the esteemed Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif, who was tragically killed by police in Kenya nearly two years ago.

PFUJ President Afzal Butt and Secretary General Arshad Ansari (pictured) expressed their sentiments, stating, "While no amount of compensation can ease the suffering of Arshad Sharif's family and his numerous followers, this verdict provides some measure of solace and justice. We have consistently demanded a transparent and independent investigation into his murder, involving both Pakistani and Kenyan authorities under the auspices of the United Nations."

The Kajiado High Court's ruling acknowledges the unlawful actions of Kenyan authorities, which violated Sharif's right to life. The court has ordered the director of public prosecutions and the independent policing oversight authority to complete their investigations and charge the responsible police officers.

The PFUJ welcomes the court's decision and hopes it will lead to greater accountability and justice in this case. Arshad Sharif's fearless journalism and his critiques of corruption and the establishment's interference in politics inspired many, and his legacy continues to resonate throughout Pakistan.—A PFUJ media release
