Journalists across beats are invited to attend a free, one-hour webinar titled 'Covering Mental Health Equity: A Mental Health Reporting Project Webinar', on September 9. The session is designed to help reporters understand how to report on mental health with accuracy, empathy, and a deeper awareness of equity issues.
This timely initiative is a collaboration between The Poynter Institute and The Carter Center, supported by the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation (BBRF).
The webinar offers practical tools and editorial insights for covering stories at the intersection of mental health, race, justice, and inequality. Participants will learn how to find diverse sources, recognize systemic barriers, and challenge harmful myths or stereotypes in reporting. Those who register will also get replay access after the session.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
Understand that equity means fair and equal access to quality mental health care for all, regardless of background or circumstances
Identify systemic disparities, racial trauma, and the impact of bias on mental health
Develop stories that challenge misinformation and stereotypes
Recognize reporting gaps and pursue story angles that advance health equity
The webinar is ideal for reporters, editors, producers, engagement specialists, and students working on stories related to health, education, criminal justice, immigration, and community affairs. It is especially relevant for Rosalynn Carter Fellowship alumni and participants in the Mental Health Newsroom Collaborative.

Kerwin Speight, Faculty, Poynter
