Express Tribune likely to end partnership with International New York Times

The Express Tribune may conclude its collaboration with the International New York Times later this year. This follows recent resignations and staff layoffs at the paper.

ISLAMABAD – The Express Tribune, Pakistan’s only internationally-affiliated newspaper is likely to end its partnership with the International New York Times later this year.

A partnership that began when the Tribune was launched in 2010 has seen copies of the international paper being distributed in Pakistan along with the national daily. From 1967, the International New York Times was published as the International Herald Tribune, and was renamed on October 15, 2013.

There have been two significant developments at the Tribune this month. First, Kamal Siddiqi, the man who edited the paper since its birth, resigned and second, over 30 staff members were laid off days after he quit.

Although there was no official confirmation about the likely culmination of the contract between the two newspapers, it could have links with the Tribune management’s plans to shift focus from print to electronic and digital media.

The Tribune is part of the Express Media Group that also runs the Urdu-language Express News Television and Daily Express.
