Chief justice's argument with Husain Naqi angers journalists

ISLAMABAD - A testy argument between Chief Justice Saqib Nisar and veteran journalist Husain Naqi (pictured) has angered journalists.

Through tweets some tried to make the chief justice realize Naqi's stature while others expressed anger.

The argument took place during a hearing of retired Justice Amir Raza A Khan’s resignation as chairperson of Punjab Healthcare Commission (PHC).

As Naqi, a member of the PHC board dissolved by the Supreme Court, insisted that he should be heard, the chief justice seemed to lose his temper. He termed Naqi an “impudent man” and ordered to take him out of the court. Naqi tendered his apology.

Columnist Zahid Hussain maintained the CJ has no right to humiliate citizens. “The CJ does not have the right to humiliate an honorable citizen. Despicable behavior. Unbecoming of his position.”

Diplomat and journalist Wajid Shamsul Hasan was all praise for Naqi. “Hussain Naqi is a great crusader for justice, for the rights of the people. Individuals who reach high positions through sycophancy, flattery and menial services to their masters like nawaz sharif do not know who Hussain Naqi is. Their pelf and power will be soon over!”

Naimat Khan, joint secretary Karachi Press Club, also expressed his anger. “What else can you expect from Saqib Nisar? He doesn't have the caliber to know as who Hussain Naqi Sb is.”

For veteran actor Samina Ahmed the spat was a sad day for Pakistan. “A sad day when Hussain Naqi is treated such.”

Matiullah Jan was as usual sarcastic. “Daily @thenews_intl beat daily @dawn_com in courage for reporting veteran journalist Hussain Naqi’s spat with CJP Saqib Nisar. When we abandon voices of conscience we lose credibility/freedoms fast. I hope in-chamber meetings with Chief Justice over treason case r not the reason.”

For novelist Mohammad Hanif, no one messes with the veteran journalist. “…No one messes with Hussain Naqi, like really no one.”
