APNEC Chairman and Dawn unionist Shafiuddin Ashraf dies
Shafiuddin Ashraf, age 63, died after a long illness at Ziauddin Hospital in Karachi. He was a prominent figure in media worker advocacy and active in unions.

KARACHI – Shafiuddin Ashraf, Chairman All Pakistan Newspapers Employees Confederation (APNEC) and a general secretary of Pakistan Herald Workers Union died here on Friday evening after a long illness. He was 63.

Ashraf passed away at the Ziauddin Hospital, North Nazimabad at 7:45 pm where he was under treatment.

He was diagnosed with cancer about six months ago and underwent chemotherapy. He had beaten the disease but died of septicemia and hospital-acquired pneumonia.

Ashraf was an active unionist and always fought for the cause of the workers. He joined Dawn in 1975.

Chairman Press Council of Pakistan Dr. Salahuddin Mengal expressed his profound grief over Ashraf’s death.

He said that as the APNEC head Ashraf rendered great sacrifices for the betterment of media workers.

He was to be buried at Model Town Colony, Malir.
